A TAPE MEASURE!, Well not to often, but I’ve had occasion to make manual exposure calculations and I had to know the distances. The round things are lens hoods they are the way you keep that nasty side light from making spots and rainbows on your picture. I mentioned at least one other place that I tend to use slow films. That leads to long Exposure times (long shutter times) and the camera gets mounted on a tripod to keep the blur away. The shutter release cable is one more way to help reduce blur from accidentally moving the camera while "pushing the button".
